Media & Public Engagement

I engage with national and international media to share research, stories, and knowledge about ocean literacy, kelp forests, and marine ecosystems across Australia’s temperate reefs. Through television, radio, podcasts, print media, and public engagement, I aim to make marine science accessible, foster connection to the ocean, and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our coastal environments. As part of Science & Technology Australia’s Superstars of STEM program, I am also passionate about increasing the visibility of women in marine science and encouraging greater diversity and representation in STEM fields.

Kelp restoration featured on national television

Our collaborative kelp restoration work was recently featured on ABC’s Gardening Australia, bringing national attention to the decline of kelp forests across the Great Southern Reef and the efforts underway to help restore these vital marine ecosystems.

Kelp forests are among the most productive and ecologically important ecosystems on the planet, providing habitat, food, and coastal protection for countless marine species. However, warming oceans and environmental pressures are contributing to widespread decline across southern Australia.

This feature highlighted the importance of large-scale restoration, cross-agency collaboration, and public awareness in supporting the future of these underwater forests. We are grateful to Gardening Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for helping share this story with audiences across the country.

Ocean literacy research featured on Radio Marinara

Recent ocean literacy research led by our team was featured on Radio Marinara (Triple R) on 3 May, highlighting national efforts to strengthen public understanding and connection to the ocean.

The discussion covered the launch of a national ocean literacy survey, outcomes from a primary school education program supporting marine awareness and stewardship, and the formation of a new national ocean literacy research group aimed at strengthening collaboration across Australia.

Together, these initiatives reflect the growing importance of ocean literacy in supporting marine conservation, education, and community engagement.

Marine biobanks featured in The Guardian

Research exploring the role of marine biobanks in protecting vulnerable ocean species was recently featured in The Guardian, highlighting emerging approaches to marine conservation and restoration in Australia. The article showcased Deakin University’s “living library” at the Queenscliff Marine Science Centre, where researchers are working to preserve and restore important marine species including golden kelp and native oysters.

The feature explored how marine biobanks can support conservation, restoration, and long-term ecosystem resilience by safeguarding species threatened by marine heatwaves, habitat degradation, and environmental change. It also highlighted ongoing kelp restoration initiatives across Victoria and the growing importance of restoration science for the future of Australia’s Great Southern Reef, bringing these efforts to an international audience.
